📖 Course Description:
This course provides an in-depth study of modern Arabic poetry, tracing its development from the renaissance (Nahda) to contemporary times. Learners will explore the major movements, literary schools, and social issues that shaped poetry in the modern Arab world.
The course highlights the works of renowned poets such as Ahmed Shawqi, Jameel Sidqi al-Zahawi, Mahmoud Darwish, Ali Ahmad Said (Adonis), and Ali Mahmoud Taha. Students will engage with poems from different traditions—neoclassical, romantic, symbolic, and free verse—and analyze their literary features, themes, and cultural context.
By combining historical background with close reading of texts, this course develops the student’s ability to appreciate, analyze, and compose Arabic poetry at an advanced level.
