MODERN ARABIC POETRY
Course Summary: This course provides an in-depth exploration of the evolution of Arabic poetry from the late 19th century to the contemporary period. It introduces students to the major literary movements, influential poets, and significant poetic innovations that have shaped modern Arabic literature. The course examines the transformation of poetic themes, forms, and language under the influence of political, social, and cultural changes in the Arab world. Through critical reading and analysis of selected poems and schools—such as the Neo-Classical (School of Revival), Romantic (Diwan, Apollo, Mahjar), and Modernist (Free Verse and Contemporary)—students will gain insights into how Arab poets responded to colonialism, nationalism, identity, exile, and modernity. The course also emphasizes the development of poetic style, imagery, and the role of intertextuality. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with the analytical tools to appreciate the richness and diversity of modern Arabic poetry and its role as a mirror of Arab intellectual and cultural life.
