Explore the growth of Arabic literature in Kerala, its poets, prose writers, and cultural interactions between Kerala and the Arab world.


📖 Course Description:

This course examines the historical, cultural, and literary relationship between Kerala and the Arab world, highlighting the unique tradition of Arabic writing in Kerala. Students will explore the origin, development, and contributions of poets, prose writers, and institutions that shaped Kerala Arabic literature.

The course includes a study of three generations of Arabic poets in Kerala, including figures such as Umar al-Khazi, NK Ahmed Moulavi, Moidu Moulavi Kuttyadi, and Moosa Airoor. It also focuses on Arabic prose works of the Makhdhoom family, Dr. Mohiuddin Aluway, and selected Arabic works like Thuhfathul Mujahideen and Fathul Mubeen.

By the end of the course, learners will gain a strong understanding of the Kerala-Arab literary connection and the unique contributions of Kerala to the wider tradition of Arabic literature.

Block 1: Kerala–Arab Relations
Unit 1: Relationship of Arabs with Malabar. Unit 2: Emergence and growth of Arabic literature in Kerala. Unit 3: Noted institutions and their contribution.

Block 2: Arabic Poetry in Kerala
Unit 1: First Generation Poets – Umar al-Khazi Veliyankode, Muhammad al-Khazi. Unit 2: Second Generation Poets – Aboobacker Muhiyudeen, Aboo Salma, Mohammed al-Falaki, Aboo Laila Muhammed ibnu Meeran. Unit 3: Third Generation Poets – Ali Kochanoor, N.K. Ahmed Moulavi, Moidu Moulavi Kuttyadi, Moosa Airoor.

Block 3: Arabic Prose in Kerala
Unit 1: The Makhdhoom family and their contributions. Unit 2: Dr. Mohiuddin Aluway.

Block 4: Noted Arabic Works in Kerala
Unit 1: Thuhfathul Mujahideen. Unit 2: Irshadul Ibad Ela Sabeelirashad. Unit 3: Fathul Mubeen (First 20 lines).
