📖 Course Description:

This course introduces learners to the fundamentals of research and academic writing, equipping them with the skills needed for advanced study and publication. It covers the principles of research design, literature review, citation practices, research ethics, and writing formats such as synopsis, abstracts, and research papers.

Students will explore how to distinguish research from inquiry, identify primary and secondary sources, and recognize research gaps. Practical training will also be given in bibliographic referencing, academic integrity, and publication benchmarks, preparing learners for both postgraduate studies and professional academic work.

By the end of the course, students will be confident in their ability to conduct systematic research, write academically, and publish responsibly.

Course Content

Block 1: Understanding Research
Unit 1: Distinguishing Research from Inquiry – causative premises, formal/informal inquiry, questions and answers. Unit 2: Research – primary & secondary sources, etymology, driving questions, significance, and design. Unit 3: Bibliographic sources – locating, annotating, and organizing references. Unit 4: Reviewing Literature – convergence/divergence of sources, identifying research gaps, establishing significance.

Block 2: Writing Formats
Unit 1: Synopsis and abstract writing – conventions, practices, and executive summaries. Unit 2: Citing and citation styles – managing references across different formats (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.). Unit 3: Research ethics – intellectual property rights, copyrights, plagiarism. Unit 4: Publication procedures – benchmarks for journals, ResearchGate, Scopus indexing.
