About Course

This course provides an in-depth study of Arabic Syntax for postgraduate students, covering both classical and modern aspects of the language. It is designed to help learners understand the core structures of Arabic grammar, including syntax (النحو), morphology (الصرف), parsing (الإعراب), and advanced sentence patterns.

Through structured practice, students will strengthen their ability to analyze texts, construct accurate sentences, and apply grammatical principles in both academic and real-life communication. The course also integrates vocabulary, idioms, and practical expressions to enhance proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA).

What Will You Learn?

  • In this course, you will master the core rules of Arabic sentence structure, both nominal and verbal.
  • You will gain a solid understanding of nouns, pronouns, adjectives, numbers, cases, and particles, applying them in context.
  • The course trains you to conjugate and analyze verbs of different types and moods, and to construct relative and conditional sentences.
  • You will also practice i‘rab (parsing) and the correct use of Kaana, Inna, nasikh verbs, and al af‘al al khamsa.
  • Advanced topics such as absolute object, tamyiz, hal, mustathna, and derived nouns (ism fa‘il, maf‘ul, makan, zaman, aala) are covered in depth.
  • Finally, you will enrich your proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic by learning useful vocabulary, idioms, expressions, and adjectives for academic and daily use.

Course Content

Block 1: Structure-Based Practice
Unit 1: Structure-Based Practice – Part 1 Covers articles, nominal sentences, gender, declension of nouns, cases, numbers of nouns, genitive, pronouns, and adjectives. Unit 2: Structure-Based Practice – Part 2 Focuses on verbs: imperfect tense and moods, imperative, passive verbs, triliteral and quadriliteral verbs, and irregular verbs. Unit 3: Structure-Based Practice – Part 3 Explores relative sentences and conditional sentences with practice exercises. Unit 4: Structure-Based Practice – Part 4 Covers cardinal and ordinal numbers, fractions, date & time expressions, and nouns of place and time.

Block 2: Syntax Practices
Unit 1: Syntax Practices – Part 1 Introduction to verbal sentences, subject & object, cases of verbs, and usage of Kaana & Inna. Unit 2: Syntax Practices – Part 2 Parsing (I‘rab), al Maqsur & al Manqus nouns, pronouns, mudmira, particles (nawasib & jawazim), and al Af‘al al Khamsa. Unit 3: Syntax Practices – Part 3 Focus on al Asma’ al Khamsa, proper nouns, definite and indefinite nouns (nakira & ma‘rifa). Unit 4: Syntax Practices – Part 4 Covers nasikh verbs, al Af‘al al Isthmrar, the absolute object (maf‘ul mutlaq), and the object of reason.

Block 3: Syntax Practices (Advanced)
Unit 5: Syntax Practices – Part 5 Explains adverbs of place & time, details of subject & predicate, Anna & Inna, and al Masdar al Mu’awwal. Unit 6: Syntax Practices – Part 6 Covers al Mujarrad & al Mazeed, hamza, al Wasl & al Qat‘, ism al fa‘il and ism al maf‘ul. Unit 7: Syntax Practices – Part 7 Studies al Mustathna, al Hal, al Tamyiz, al Munada, al Mamnu‘ min al-sarf, al Na‘t (real & figurative), al Thawkid, al Athf, and al Badal. Unit 8: Syntax Practices – Part 8 Tools of question & answer, ism tafdheel, ism makan, ism zaman, ism aala, and al T‘alaawul Ibdal.

Block 4: Language Structure and Vocabulary
Unit 1: Vocabulary Vocabulary from daily life, different fields, countries, nationalities, days, months, dates, colors, and useful verbs. Unit 2: Idioms, Phrases, and Expressions Common idiomatic expressions and practical usage. Unit 3: Cardinal and Ordinal Numbers (1–10) Focused practice on basic numbers and usage. Unit 4: Common Adjectives Introduction to descriptive vocabulary for everyday communication.
