Explore the history, development, and themes of Arabic novels, from their origins to contemporary works, with detailed study of eminent writers and texts.


📖 Course Description:

This course provides an in-depth study of the Arabic novel as a literary genre, tracing its origins, growth, and evolution into modern times. Learners will analyze the narrative techniques, themes, and cultural contexts that distinguish Arabic novels, while understanding their connections to both traditional storytelling and modern fiction.

The syllabus covers early narrative literature, the rise of the novel during the World Wars, and the contributions of leading novelists such as Muhammad Husayn Haykal, Naguib Mahfouz, and Taleb al-Refai. Students will also explore thematic areas such as realistic novels, historical novels, Islamic novels, and Palestinian novels, culminating in a detailed reading of Al-Najdi by Taleb al-Refai.

Through critical analysis, the course aims to strengthen students’ ability to appreciate, evaluate, and interpret Arabic novels as a vibrant part of modern literature.

Unit 1: Narrative literature and fiction in Arabic heritage. Unit 2: Development of novel literature in Arabic. Unit 3: Historical novels.

Block 2: Novel Literature During the World Wars
Unit 1: Muhammad Husayn Haykal and Zaynab. Unit 2: Egyptian realistic novel. Unit 3: Autobiographical novels.

Block 3: Contemporary Arabic Novel
Unit 1: Naguib Mahfouz and his contributions to the Arabic novel. Unit 2: Islamic novels. Unit 3: Palestinian novels.

Block 4: Detailed Study of the Novel
Unit 1: Al-Najdi by Taleb al-Refai (Kuwait).
