Study the origin, development, and cultural significance of Arabic drama, exploring modern playwrights, themes, and selected plays.


📖 Course Description:

This course introduces students to the history and development of Arabic drama, from its roots in Arab cultural heritage to its modern expression. It traces the growth of drama and theater movements in the Arab world, examining both poetic drama and modern prose drama.

Learners will study the contributions of Egyptian dramatists, especially Tawfiq al-Hakim, and the influence of Western theater systems on Arab drama. The course also highlights contemporary playwrights such as Sa‘adullah Wannus and offers a close reading of his play Rihlat Hanzala.

By the end of this course, students will be able to analyze Arabic plays critically, understand the role of drama in Arab society, and appreciate theater as a powerful literary and cultural form.

Unit 1: Development of drama and theater in the Arab world. Unit 2: The advent of poetic drama.

Block 2: Advent of Modern Theatre in Egypt
Unit 1: Contributions of Egyptian dramatists. Unit 2: Tawfiq al-Hakim and Arabic prose drama.

Block 3: Contemporary Theatre in the Arab World
Unit 1: Arabic plays after Tawfiq al-Hakim. Unit 2: Sa‘adullah Wannus and contemporary playwrights. Unit 3: Colloquial plays – Arab theater in various countries.

Block 4: Detailed Study of the Play
Unit 1: Rihlat Hanzala by Sa‘adullah Wannus (Syria).
