Explore the development, themes, and writers of Arabic short stories from early modern to contemporary periods.


📖 Course Description:

This course offers a focused study of the Arabic short story as a literary genre, tracing its growth from early developments to contemporary forms. Students will examine the historical evolution of Arabic short stories, the contributions of major writers, and the literary movements that shaped this genre in different Arab regions.

The course features a survey of prominent Syro-Lebanese, Egyptian, and contemporary Arab writers, including Salim al-Bustani, Muhammad Taymur, Jamal al-Ghitani, Taleb Alrefai, Saud Alsanousi, and Layla al-Uthman. Students will also engage with selected short stories, analyzing their themes, structures, and socio-cultural contexts.

By the end of this course, learners will develop the ability to critically read, evaluate, and appreciate Arabic short fiction, while gaining insight into its place in modern Arabic literature.

Block 1: Short Story in Arabic Literature
Unit 1: Development of Short Stories in Arabic. Unit 2: Syro-Lebanese Writers – Salim al-Bustani and others. Unit 3: Short Story in Egypt – Muhammad Taymur, Mustafa Lutfi al-Manfaluti, Mahmud Taymur, Yusuf Idris, Yahya Haqqi, Ihsan Abd al-Quddus.

Block 2: Contemporary Arabic Short Story Writers
Unit 1: Jamal al-Ghitani. Unit 2: Taleb Alrefai. Unit 3: Saud Alsanousi. Unit 4: Layla al-Uthman.

Block 3: Selected Short Stories from Early Period
Unit 1: Addafeenusssageer by Mustafa Lutfi al-Manfaluti. Unit 2: Arkhasu Layalee by Yusuf Idris.

Block 4: Selected Short Stories from Contemporary Period
Unit 1: Khurba al-Madkhal by Taleb Alrefai (Kuwait). Unit 2: Al-Bunsay wa Rajul al-Ajooz by Saud Alsanousi (Kuwait).
